Thursday 26th September
We slept in this morning and got up after 8 a.m. Breakfast was the usual of peaches, coffee, and the poppyseed strudel we had bought at Sicamus. Then we finished packing and checked out of the hotel. We drove into town for more gas and then took the Icefields Highway towards Athabasca Falls. We arrived there and it was raining heavily so we walked to the falls and took some quick photos and rushed back to the car.
We drove on down the Icefields Highway in the most amazing weather. It was rain – snow – sun – sleet – snow – sun in quick succession. Just amazing transitions from one weather system to another.
We stopped at the Sunwupta Falls resort which has a teepee outside and a shop which sells a lot of Indian art and artifacts. We bought a few items and then drove on towards Lake Louise.
At Lake Louise we drove up to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise which is a grand old hotel typical of some of these resorts. We parked in the garage and then entered the very magnificent hotel lobby and made outer way to the Fairview Restaurant where we managed to secure a table by the window for a great view of the lake and surrounding mountains. We had a nice lunch during which time the sun which shone at the start had turned to heavy snow. Then almost as quickly, by the time we had finished lunch and paid, the sun was out giving us a the chance to go out into the lakeside gardens and see the magnificent lake and mountain scenery which has made this place world famous.
Despite the changeable weather there were quite a few people out in kayaks and canoes on the lake. MAC went down the steps to test the waters of the lake.
After browsing some of the hotel’s many shops we managed to extricate ourselves from the car park and headed off to Banff down the trans-Canadian Highway again with intermittent snow showers and sun.
We arrived in Banff and found the King Edward Hotel, parked and checked in with our bags.
